What are the advantages and disadvantages of public and private universities in Bangladesh?

Public and private universities have some advantages and disadvantages in Bangladesh. This article discusses and shows some problems. This article was written on January 14, 2020, perspective. I hope some issues will get a solution soon.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of public and private universities in Bangladesh?

Prestigious: In Bangladesh, most of the people think that to study at any public universities is more prestigious than private universities. To support these phenomena has lots of reasons, but the most common cause is to get a chance in public universities is very tough. On the other hand, taking admission in private universities is easy. Only a few universities take an admission test, but admission test questions are not standard enough. Most private universities don't make any admission test, and the student gains admission easily.

Quality of education: Most public universities' educational attributes are so good. They provide a better quality of education to maintain a standard of the question, check the exam paper two times by the teacher, and take a viva after every semester final exam. On the other hand, in private universities, most teachers don't maintain the standard of questions. Check the exam paper with one teacher. But only a few private universities provide a measure of education.

Quality of teachers: It's a common problem in private and public universities. Most teachers are not qualified to teach. Most teachers don't research; as a result, they don't have publications. It's effortless to apply for a teaching position if someone has only a good score. One thing is worst that in Bangladesh, many professors don't have Ph.D.

Alumni: Alumni are more strong in public universities than private universities.

Lack of research: In Bangladesh, public and private universities don’t do enough research. Only a few universities do research.

Tuition fees: Public universities tuition fees are much cheaper than private universities because the government pays the tuition fees on behalf of the student. Tuition fees in private universities differ from university to university.

Graduate faster: It's hard to finish the study on time in public universities due to political problems, session tangles. But in private universities it's possible to complete education one time; even it is also possible to finish faster than actual time.

Raging: Ragging is the most common scenario in most public universities in Bangladesh. Many students have been ragged by their senior students. Abrar Fahad (12 February 1998 - 7 October 2019), a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering department of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), had passed away due to over ragging. On the other hand, most private university students can’t give ragging due to strict rules of authority. Ragging is strictly prohibited in private universities.

Politics: In public universities, politics is the main one of the main parts. Most of the students joined politics after taking admission. Sometimes it has an adverse impact on their study. Many public university teachers also give more importance to politics than research. On the other hand, in private university politics is strictly prohibited.

Extracurricular activities: Most public universities students can attend many extracurricular activities on their campus, but most private universities don’t help their students to do additional curriculum activities.

Accommodation: Most public universities have their accommodation known as a hall, but it’s challenging to find accommodation or student hostel facilities to a private university.

Open space: Most of the public universities have an open space area and a pleasant environment. They have modern technology and also lots of facilities. Private universities have a lack of free space. Most private universities don’t have enough space; even many private universities don’t have their campuses.

Classroom size: In public universities, classroom size is more prominent than private universities.

In the above, I've discussed public and private university's problems, its advantages and disadvantages. There also have many advantages and disadvantages that I don't focus on in this article. I hope the university grant commission in Bangladesh plays a vital role in reducing these problems. I think a few years later, most of the public and private universities will play their crucial role in providing quality education.

I have a short suggestion; the proverb says that "education is the backbone of a nation." So the authority of the university will take care to recruit a teacher, they should give priority to a Ph.D. candidate, and research is a must to increase.
